How to Fix: Jetpack [auth_failed] Authorization Error

Recently (I believe it’s been since the WP 4.0 upgrade), my Jetpack Publicize settings got deactivated and I had to ‘reauthorize my connections’.

What I found is that after the WordPress 4.0 upgrade, you need to follow these steps to fix the Jetpack

[auth_failed] Authorization header was malformed error.

As always, make a complete backup of your site and database before any changes.

  1. Go to your Jetpack dashboard
  2. Go to the bottom and ‘disconnect from WordPress.com’
  3. Reconnect to WordPress.com
  4. Your connections should be restored.
  5. If any are not restored, manually click the ‘restore connection’ and follow those instructions.

If you have any issues beyond that, try adding your thoughts to this thread on the WordPress.org support page.

Hopefully this helps you fix the Jetpack [auth_failed] Authorization header was malformed error.
